Treadmill vs. running outside

Ah yes. The treadmill discussion. People ask me all the time why I’m running on a treadmill rather then running outside. Well, different reasons. Let me start with the practical one: I’m a father of two. Having kids is no walk in the park (no pun intended) and taking care of them starts at 07:15 AM and ends at around 20:00 PM. After 20:00 PM I’m not doing any workouts. I have a fulltime job as well so the best time for me to run is early in the morning. Usually I get up at 05:00 AM. Grab a banana, drink some water and I’m off to the gym. Luckily it’s only 500 meters from where I live. So I start my workout at 05:30 AM. At this time it’s dark outside. Especially with winter coming it’s just pitch black. That’s reason number 1 I’m running on a treadmill. For now. Once the days are getting longer and the sun comes up early I plan to do my runs outside.

10 years ago when I started running for the first time I was an outdoor runner. California has a better climate for running anyways and I really enjoyed it. Here in the Netherlands it’s getting cold and windy. I don’t mind running in the rain, it’s the cold I can’t stand. My muscles hurt with every step and it takes a long time before I’m warmed up. Reason #2 for running on a treadmill.

Running on a treadmill has its downsides as well. It’s boring. For now I can manage the 30 minute runs but I couldn’t run a full hour on a treadmill I think…
