Ah yes. The treadmill discussion. People ask me all the time why I’m running on a treadmill rather than running outside. Well, different reasons. Let me start with the practical one: I’m a father of two. Having kids is no walk in the park (no pun intended) and taking care of them starts at 07:15 AM and ends at around 20:00. After 20:00 I’m not doing any workouts. I have a fulltime job as well so the best time for me to run is early in the morning. Usually, I get up at 05:00 AM. Grab a banana, drink some water, and I’m off to the gym. Luckily it’s only 500 meters from where I live. So I start my workout at 05:30 AM. At this time it’s dark outside. Especially with winter coming it’s just pitch black. That’s reason number 1 I’m running on a treadmill. For now. Once the days are getting longer, and the sun comes up early I plan to do my runs outside.

Ten years ago when I started running for the first time, I was an outdoor runner. California has a better climate for running anyways, and I enjoyed it. Here in the Netherlands, it’s getting cold and windy. I don’t mind running in the rain. It’s the cold I can’t stand. My muscles hurt with every step and it takes a long time before warming up — reason #2 for running on a treadmill.

Running on a treadmill has its downsides as well. It’s boring. For now, I can manage 30-minute runs, but I couldn’t run a full hour on a treadmill I think…

Introduction

This morning I finished W2D1 (Week 2, Day 1). I picked up the C25K (Couch to 5K) routine again after finishing this ten years ago. Back then the program helped me eventually in running my first half marathon: the Rock ‘n Roll Half Marathon in San Jose, CA. Three weeks ago I got triggered to pick up running again and since I was successful in the past why not give it another shot? It’s not just picking up running; it’s changing my lifestyle. Having a desk job doesn’t help your overall fitness.

I made a promise to a friend of mine (who got into running a year ago) that we are going to run the Rotterdam marathon together. Having a goal always helps me to get motivated. Same as I did ten years ago. Once you register for a race or event, it’s becoming real. Not sure which edition we’re going to run, but I’m aiming for 2020.

So here we are. Just got into week two. I am building up my stamina with some basic interval training. I’ll keep you posted!
